But now, cradled in sand-filled hospital beds at Primary Children’s Medical Center that reduce pressure on their skin, the girls were reversed. [1]

Conjoined twins Kendra and Maliyah Herrin say they like being together all the time, but they are also full of plans for separate lives. [2]

Kendra and Maliyah Herrin were born to parents Jake and Erin Herrin February 26, 2002 at the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. [3]

Kendra Deene Herrin and Maliyah Mae Herrin, (born February 26, 2002), are former conjoined twins. [4]

The twins are in critical condition, as expected after major surgery, but their vital signs have remained stable and they show no early signs of dangerous post-surgery infections, doctors said. [1]

Kendra retained their shared kidney following the separation surgery, while Maliyah Herrin underwent dialysis until she was transplanted with a kidney donated by her mother in April 2007. [4]

The sandy-haired, blue-eyed girls share one pair of legs, a pelvis, a liver, one functioning kidney, and part of the large intestine. [5]

“They are doing extremely well,” said Dr. Rebecka Meyers, coordinator of the separation, which began Monday morning and concluded Tuesday. [...] A day after the 26-hour surgery that separated their 4-year-old conjoined daughters, Jake and Erin Herrin said they were overwhelmed by their reunion with Kendra and Maliyah. [...] Maliyah was to begin kidney dialysis in preparation for receiving a kidney from her mother in three to six months. [1]

Born at 32 weeks gestation or 8 weeks early, the girls were joined at the abdomen and pelvis and shared a kidney, liver and large intestine. [3]

Maliyah will be put on dialysis until she is strong enough for a kidney transplant from her mother, Erin Herrin, ideally within three to six months. [6]

Surgery then continued on the girls in two separate operations lasting up to eight more hours into the morning of August 8th. [4]

Since birth Kendra has been the twin on the left when the girls were facing their parents, Maliyah on the right. [1]

But a kidney transplant would have been harder before age 4, and doctors advised waiting, said Erin Herrin, who knew 18 weeks into her pregnancy that the twins would be conjoined. [7]
