new york congressional race

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Never in the history of the Republican Party - going back to before the Civil War - have there been so few members of the GOP representing the Empire State in Congress. [1]

No word yet from Republican former state Comptroller candidate Chris Callaghan, who could give Brooks a run for her money. [2]

For the first time since his inauguration, President Barack Obama is flexing his electoral muscle, urging supporters to organize and vote for New York Democratic congressional candidate Scott Murphy. [3]

But what usually would be a local contest with little national interest has turned in part into an early referendum on President Obama, his polices to jump-start the economy and the reputations of the Democratic and Republican parties. [4]

The candidates battling in the 20th Congressional District in the mostly rural north of the state are almost neck and neck, with Democrat Scott Murphy a fraction ahead of Republican Jim Tedisco, according to one poll. [5]

“It’s the first early public referendum on the Obama presidency,” said Richard Himelfarb, politics professor at Hofstra University. [...] “Scott understands the potential we have to rebuild our economy and create a new foundation for prosperity. [6]

Democrat Scott Murphy is trying to win the special election in New York’s 20th Congressional District. [4]

With polls tight, a Republican state legislator and Democratic venture capitalist battle daily over the economic stimulus package in New York congressional race that’s seen as a referendum on President Barack Obama’s policies and a test of GOP strength. [...] “What we should have done was go back to the drawing board, get a stimulus package that truly creates jobs, invests in infrastructure and the economy,” says Jim Tedisco, a Republican echoing Washington party leaders who almost unanimously opposed the $787 billion package. [7]

Dan Maffei, a Democrat favored to win the seat now held by retiring Republican Rep. James Walsh in the Syracuse area, said the region has kept the same moderate political bent, while the nation’s has shifted. [...] The last time the state’s representatives in Congress were that lopsided was 1851, when 32 Whigs outnumbered a lonely Democrat and a member of the Free-Soil Party. [...] “I am concerned that the entire Northeast has become very much one party and I do believe in a two-party system, and I think the Republicans have to get their act together or the Democrats will be in danger of playing more to the extreme,” he said. [1]

Scott Murphy, conversely, stands with Obama and fellow Democrats who control Congress. [7]

With the news today that Schenectady Mayor Brian Stratton isn’t going to try to follow in his father’s footsteps and go to Congress, the way seems relatively clear on the Democratic side for former Hillary Clinton aide Tracey Brooks, who was endorsed this morning by McNulty’s sister, Green Island Mayor Ellen McNulty. As many arriving here have asked, yes, I am the Scott Murphy that co-created and co-designed the Space Quest series of adventure games published in the late 80’s and early 90’s by Sierra, Inc., a company founded and built to prominence by Ken and Roberta Williams, and now owned by a company called Vivendi-Universal, or Activision,… who the f*@k really knows anymore, but about whom I know nothing and care not at all, but who apparently holds all rights to Space Quest, just for the record. I thought I’d be a little bored, but I did want to see leopard server and actually look at an Apple X-Serve. [4]

I want to thank Adventure Classic Gaming for the opportunity. [2]

After the defeats suffered by conservative and pro-troop candidates this last election cycle, we’re must begin rebuilding and shrink the majority currently led by hardcore leftists like Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. [1]

Contributions to Tedisco for Congress are not deductible as charitable contributions for federal income tax purposes. [2]

Political committees must use best efforts to collect and report the name, mailing address, occupation and employer of individuals who contribute more than $200 in an election cycle. [3]

We won another run-off election for Congress in Louisiana, and we have to keep that streak of victories going by taking this seat in New York back. [1]

Contributions from corporations and foreign nationals are prohibited. [3]

Tedisco was a frequent critic of former Governor of New York Eliot Spitzer. [4]

The maximum contribution is $2,400 per individual. [3]

Help us elect a solid conservative and chip away at Pelosi’s anti-military majority by making a contribution to MAF Freedom PAC today. [1]

On January 23, 2009, after Governor David Paterson announced that he had selected Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand to fill the United States Senate seat vacated by Hillary Clinton, Tedisco stated his intention to run for Congress to replace Gillibrand in New York’s 20th Congressional District. [...] In 2006, he ran on the Republican, Conservative, and Independence Party lines. [4]

“I believe America needs to stay on the offensive in the war on terror and that we need to be capturing or killing terrorists and not turning them loose,” he said as he announced his candidacy. [...] We have such an opportunity in a special election in a little over 30 days from now in New York’s 20th Congressional district. [...] His candidacy is already generating buzz around country, and experts give him a good chance to take this seat, which was previously held by Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand, who has just been appointed to replace Hillary Clinton in the United States Senate. [...] Please consider making a contribution to help MAF PAC keep up the fight. [...] If the liberal Democrat candidate wins, it will only encourage the Congress and Obama to pull further left. [1]

naegleria

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Naegleria (nigh-GLEER-E-uh) is an ameba commonly found in warm freshwater and soil. [1]

Naegleria infection is caused by the amoeba Naegleria fowleri - a microscopic organism that lives in fresh water and soil. [2]

Naegleria fowleri, is a bactera which thrives in warm water, especially in the south and southwest parts of the United States. [3]

Naegleria species are found in freshwater habitats and moist soil throughout the world. [4]

In the 10 years from 1998 to 2007, 33 infections were reported in the U.S. Thirty-one people had contact with recreational water and two people had contact with water from a geothermal (naturally hot) water supply. [...] No. You cannot get a Naegleria infection from a properly cleaned, maintained, and disinfected swimming pool. [1]

Naegleria: Rare bacterial infection from contaminated water. [5]

Health Department officials in the affected areas pointed out that hot air temperatures raised water temperatures to levels (above 80 degrees Fahrenheit) in which the amoeba thrives. [6]

Naegleria infection most often occurs when the naegleria amoeba enters your body through your nose while swimming or participating in water sports. [2]

More than 150 cases of this disease have been recorded worldwide (Table 81-1). [7]

N. Fowleri possesses secreting proteases, phospholipases, and pore-forming peptides which are all implications of a pathogenic process. [8]

More detailed information about the symptoms, causes, and treatments of Naegleria is available below. [5]

Cases of death by amoeba are extremely rare, but from 1998 to 2007, 33 infections were reported in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. [3]

When Naegleria in soil or on some other solid are exposed to liquid such as water and have their food source removed, they undergo the transformation into di-flagellate form. [8]

Infection with Naegleria causes the disease primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), a brain infection that leads to the destruction of brain tissue. [1]
