winston churchill

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill, British Prime Minister during the Second World War, should not be confused with the American novelist Winston Churchill. [1]

Winston Churchill was the son of conservative politician Lord Randolph Churchill and his American wife, Jennie Jerome, and a direct descendant from the first Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722). [2]

Winston Churchill (Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill) (30 November 1874 - 24 January 1965) was a leading world statesman of the twentieth century, best known as the Prime Minister who led Britain to victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. [3]

Winston Churchill died on January 24, 1965. [4]

Born November 30, 1874 at Blenheim palace, Churchill is frequently regarded as Britain’s greatest prime minister of the 20th century. [1]

Churchill is widely considered the greatest political figure in 20th-century Britain. [2]

He is particularly remembered for his indomitable spirit while leading Great Britain to victory in World War II. [5]

Statesman, historian, and biographer, whose five years of war leadership (1940-45) secured him a central place in modern British history. [2]

The Right Honourable Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (1874-1965), the son of Lord Randolph Churchill and an American mother, was educated at Harrow and Sandhurst. [4]

Churchill fought with the British Army in India and Sudan, and as a journalist was captured in South Africa (where his dispatches from the Boer War first brought him to public prominence). [5]

During his army career, Churchill saw action in India, in the Sudan and the Second Boer War. [6]

Churchill’s literary career began with campaign reports: The Story of the Malakand Field Force (1898) and The River War (1899), an account of the campaign in the Sudan and the Battle of Omdurman. [4]

Educated at Harrow and Sandhurst - and indeed largely self-educated, Churchill began as an officer in the British Army, gaining early fame for his war reporting from the Sudan and the Second Boer War. [3]

Soldier, politician and finally prime minister, Winston Churchill was one of Britain’s greatest 20th-century heroes. [5]

Churchill also served as First Sea Lord during the First World War, losing the position after the disastrous attack on the Dardanelles. [1]

Anne Meara started out and ended up a distinguished dramatic actress–and in between, scored high marks as a comedienne, playwright and screenwriter. [1]

Sorry there is no news for Anne Meara at this time. [2]

Anne Meara (born September 20, 1929) is an American comedian and actress. [...] She and Jerry Stiller were a prominent 1960s comedy team, appearing as Stiller and Meara, and are the parents of actor/comedian Ben and actress Amy Stiller. [3]

Mother of actor Ben Stiller. [4]

A loopy standup comedian, actor and writer, Meara paired with her husband Jerry Stiller and became something of a staple on the American comedy scene beginning in the late 1950s. [2]

Forming the comedy team of Stiller & Meara, The team skyrocketed to stardom via their many appearances on such 1960s variety series as The Ed Sullivan Show and The Steve Allen Show. [...] Auditioning for an opera in 1954, she met another struggling actor, Jerry Stiller; they were married the following year. [5]

Both were members of the improvisational company The Compass Players (which later became The Second City), and the pair, as the comedy team Stiller and Meara, brought many of their real-life relationship foibles to bear on their often-improvised comedy routines. [3]

Launching her career in summer stock in 1950, Meara won an Obie Award for her intensely dramatic performance in the 1955 off-Broadway production Maedchen in Uniform; during this period, she was also a semi-regular on the NBC TV daytime soaper The Greatest Gift. [5]

Achieving something of a record with 34 appearances on the legendary Ed Sullivan variety show on CBS, they formed a production company in the early 1960s to write, produce and record a series of innovative and award-winning TV and radio commercials. [2]

She has long stressed that she did not convert at Stiller’s request, but because “Catholicism was dead to me”, and she simply came to prefer the more “lively” character of Jewish culture. [3]

They also appeared together on Broadway, in the supporting cast of the 1971 sitcom The Paul Lynde Show, and in an obscure 1975 syndicated TV comedy “filler” series Take Five With Stiller and Meara. [1]

Meara was born in Queens, New York, the daughter of Mary (n?e Dempsey) and Edward Joseph Meara, Irish -born immigrants from a village called Toomevara. [3]

The red-haired, Brooklyn-born Meara began her career in off-Broadway theater, appearing as the Nurse in the New York Shakespeare Festival’s production of “Romeo and Juliet” (1957), a role she reprised for a 1988 production. [2]

AP Photo/Matt Sayles Sacha Baron Cohen was struck down with an embarrassing ailment while filming his new movie “Bruno” — he reportedly suffered an allergic reaction while bleaching his body hair. [1]

Before filming the upcoming Bruno flick, Sacha Baron Cohen may have gone a bit overboard in the character preparation department! [2]

Comedic actor Sacha Baron Cohen - best known for portraying a crude journalist from Kazakhstan in the 2006 film Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan - was detained by police in Milan, Italy, on Thursday after storming a runway during a fashion show by designer Agatha Ruiz de la Prada as Br?no, his flamboyant Austrian fashionista alter ego. [3]

The British funnyman decided he needed have smooth skin to play the outrageous gay fashion journalist, but instead of opting for a painful waxing treatment, the comic decided to lighten his body hair instead. [1]

The tagline’s ‘Borat’ shout-out is a nice wink to Sacha Baron Cohen fans. [4]

He was simply trying to bleach the hair around his batcave for a movie role — when Sacha Baron Cohen reportedly broke out in a rash so bad, he couldn’t sit for days. [5]

Security attempted to remove him from the runway, but Cohen - who didn’t break character - evaded them as he continued to strut down the catwalk. [3]

Two anonymous plaintiffs are suing 20th Century Fox and One America Productions, claiming members of their college fraternity were interviewed to become part of the smash “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan” film. [5]

“[Sacha] heard that all-over hairlessness is a popular trend in the gay community, so he thought he’d bleach all his hair so it looked invisible,” a source close to the actor divulged to reporters. [2]

Accepting the award last night for best actor in a comedy or a musical, Cohen brought the house to tears (of laughter) by slipping into a mock-serious appreciation of “the dark side of America,” referring of course to his “Borat” co-star and his testicles and “rancid bubbles” of air that had been trapped in bodily crevices unsealed for decades and… oh, hell, just watch. [5]

According to The Huffington Post, Cohen was not carrying identification with him at the time of his detainment and asked authorities if he could use the phone. [3]

Sacha Noam Baron Cohen (born October 13, 1971) is an English comedian and actor most noted for his comic characters Borat (a Kazakh reporter), Ali G (a junglist from Staines, England) and Bruno (a flamboyantly gay Austrian fashion reporter).. [4]

British funnyman Sacha Baron Cohen had the last laugh in a legal battle over his TV comedy “Da Ali G Show,” when a judge dismissed the lawsuit because “no reasonable person” can take the character seriously. [1]

In the wake of Sacha Baron Cohen’s reign of chaos as bumbling Kazakh reporter Borat, it seems that real crews from the central Asian country are having a hard time being taken seriously. [5]

Cohen has faced a variety of legal troubles over his comic creations, including a string of lawsuits from members of the public who alleged they were duped into appearing in his 2006 film “Borat: Cultural Learnings Of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation Of Kazakhstan.” [1]
