tubifex worms

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

I bought some tubifex worms from a LFS about 3 weeks ago to feed to my bettas at home. [1]

The consequence of feeding live Tubifex worms to African Cichlids is a disease known as..Malawi Bloat” which is a severe bacterial infection in the intestine (Malawi Cichlids have very long intestines because most of them are herbivores). [2]

Whether conditioning fish before breeding, or simply looking for a treat to offer your fish, consider freeze-dried tubifex worms ‘ your fish will love them. [3]

These red tubifex worms look just like earth worms, and are totally aquatic. [4]

The severity of infection within a river’s trout population could well depend on the abundance and distribution of Tubifex worms. [6]

I read on the web somewhere that tubifex worms can be cultured so I tried my hand on doing that. [1]

I’m calling this article Worms in the Aquarium..Part One” because the GSAS meeting starts in one hour and I’m going to have to do this off the top of my head. [2]

These worms are relatively easy to culture, but it takes a month or more to get a culture going to the point that it is ready to harvest. [7]

Worms are the favorite food of many fish, however they often carry disease that can devastate an aquarium. [3]

Tubifex (Tubifex tubifex), also called the sludge worm or sewage worm, is a species of tubificid segmented worm that inhabits the sediments of lakes and rivers on several continents. [7]

These thread-like worms that live in the mud on stream bottoms are a critical host in the life cycle of WD. [...] The often-maligned “San Juan Worm”actually represents an aquatic annelid closely related to common earthworms named Tubifex tubifex. [6]

So what I did was to put the worms in my then unused 2 ft tank with water to about a depth of 1 ?”. [1]

I’ve found shallow tubs work best, with low sides, 2 -3 inches of water, and a good supply of feed will make a small culture of these worms bloom fairly well, with populations doubling in about a week. [4]
