drake collapse

Friday, July 31st, 2009

The new service point called “All Services: Ask Here” will be staffed almost exclusively by Drake Library Student Service staff. [1]

Though he drilled only three oil wells in his lifetime, Edwin Drake (1819-1880) is known as the “Father of the Petroleum Industry” because the technology he devised to drill the first commercial oil well in the United States revolutionized how crude oil was produced and launched the large-scale petroleum industry. [2]

South African-born sculptor Ledelle Moe will present her most recently completed collection of work, “Memorial (Collapse)” at Drake University’s Anderson Gallery. [3]

), also known as Colonel Drake, was an American oil driller, popularly credited with being the first to drill for oil in the United States. [4]

The work draws from the 2001 collapse of the World Trade Center towers in New York City, and the willful destruction of religious statues of Hindu gods in Indian and political statues in the Middle East. [3]

Seneca Oil, originally called the Pennsylvania Rock Oil Company, was founded by George Bissell and Jonathan Eveleth. [4]

The exhibit opens with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. [3]

Drake’s mission is to provide an exceptional learning environment that prepares students for meaningful personal lives, professional accomplishments, and responsible global citizenship. [1]

Approximately 50 students at Drake University have organized a week-long Mardi Gras-themed relief effort to benefit the victims of Hurricane Katrina. [5]

Drake decided to drill in the manner of salt well drillers. [4]

“The growth in our first-year class is testimony to the hard work and creativity of our admission and financial aid staff, and to the participation of dozens of faculty and staff in a coordinated, collective effort that clearly bore results,” Drake President David Maxwell told faculty and staff in the University’s annual Fall Convocation. [5]

Edwin Laurentine Drake, born on March 11, 1819, in Greenville County, New York, grew up on family farms in New York and Vermont. [2]

They created the company after catching wind of reports that petroleum collected from an oil spring in Titusville, Pennsylvania was suitable for use as lamp fuel. [4]

The Drake experience is distinguished by collaborative learning among students, faculty, and staff and by the integration of the liberal arts and sciences with professional preparation. [1]

The next morning Drake’s driller, Billy Smith, looked into the hole in preparation for another day’s work. [4]

william hung

Friday, July 31st, 2009

A student at UC Berkeley, William Hung studies Civil Engineering, but he decided to pursue his dream of singing professionally, when he auditioned for TV’s American Idol, singing and dancing to Ricky Martin’s She Bangs. [1]

While studying civil engineering at University of California, Berkeley, Hung was inspired to audition for the third season of American Idol in San Francisco during September 2003 after winning a talent contest at his dormitory, Clark Kerr Campus. [2]

When I first saw Hong Kong-born UC Berkeley engineering student William Hung sing that Ricky Martin song on Fox’s “American Idol” last January, I tried to ignore it. [3]

Claim: American Idol favorite William Hung died of a heroin overdose. [4]

He was dropped from the contest before he completed the song, but his charm and attitude were a big hit with the viewing public, and the ensuing weeks brought a wave of articles, fan-mail and petitions calling to bring Hung back to the show, even as a guest commentator. [1]

“As an Asian-American male, I think he’s honest with himself,” said Hou, proud, in a strange way, that some dorky-looking Asian American with a Hong Kong accent and no singing talent is making it happen. [3]

Remixes of Hung’s audition performance topped song request lists at a number of radio stations. [2]

Las Vegas, NV - Kitschy American Idol Star William Hung, famous for his botching of Ricky Martin’s “She Bangs,” was found dead yesterday, apparently of an intentional heroin overdose. [4]

William Hung became famous by performing badly in a televised audition for the talent show American Idol. [1]

In mid-July 2004, a rumor began to circulate that William Hung had died of a heroin overdose. [4]

Hung’s tone-deaf performance of the Ricky Martin tune “She Bangs” was greeted with sneers by judge Simon Cowell, but Hung’s plucky reply became famous: “I already gave my best, and I have no regrets at all.” [1]

He was the final auditioner on the January 15, 2004, installment, the coup de gr?ce of an hour-long episode that showcased other would-be pop stars, mostly lacking in talent. [...] His character gets discovered as a singer, and helps a woman protect her business from her jealous, conniving elder sister. [...] Originally from Sha Tin, Hong Kong, Hung moved to Camden, New Jersey, in 1993 and graduated from the John H. Francis Polytechnic High School in Los Angeles. [...] Ron Lin, former editor in chief of the UC Berkeley’s Daily Californian notes that “(i)t’s really difficult for Asian American males to break through and (Hung) may not be the most appealing example.” [2]
