bobby bowden retiring

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Some Florida State boosters are calling for 76-year-old football coach Bobby Bowden, whose Seminoles (4-3, 2-3 ACC) are in last place in the conference’s Atlantic Division, to retire. [1]

Florida State coach Bobby Bowden has strongly implied he’s hoping to have his one-year contract renewed for one final season in 2010, but it’s unclear how much university support there is for that. [2]

Wetherell told the Post that no moves will be made during the season, adding that FSU evaluates its coaches after their seasons end. [1]

“My hope is frankly that we’ll go ahead, and if we have to, let the world know that this year will be the end of the Bowden era,” chairman Jim Smith told the Tallahassee Democrat on Sunday. [...] After Saturday’s 28-21 loss at Boston College, two Florida newspapers, including the hometown Democrat, also said Bowden, who turns 80 on Nov. 8, should call it a career at the end of this season. [3]

- Bobby Bowden plans to meet with Florida State president T.K. Wetherell later in the week to discuss his future at the school. [4]

I agree, he placed FSU on the map and made it what it is today both academically and athletically. [5]

Concerning Bowdens helm as Coach of the FSU football team Smith was quoted as saying, “I think the record will show that the Seminole Nation has been more than patient. [6]

Just because he was a great coach doesn’t mean he has the right to coach as long as he wants. [5]

“I am convinced and frankly have been for the last two seasons that coach Bowden should retire or be forced to retire,” Mettler wrote to Florida State president T.K. Wetherell, the newspaper reported. [1]

The Seminoles are 2-3 for the first time since Bowden’s inaugural season at the school 33 years ago, and 0-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference for the first time, prompting commentary about his future. [...] Smith confirmed to the Democrat that Florida State president T.K. Wetherell and legal counsel Betty Steffens have been working with Fisher to finalize a contract for him as head coach. [3]

GAINESVILLE — It was like watching a bunch of young punks tripping Grandpa and taking his meal money. [4]

Bowden then returned to Howard as head coach, where he compiled a 31′6 record between 1959 and 1962. [6]

“If they want to pull that trick, we’ll just shake the dirt off our feet and go to Europe or go on a long cruise or something,” Ann said. [2]

Woods hit a fire hydrant and tree as he pulled his Cadillac Escalade out of the driveway of his house at about 2:25 a.m. [2]

Tiger Woods (shown in file photo with wife Elin Nordegren) was injured early Friday morning outside his Florida home when his car struck a fire hydrant, then crashed into a tree. [3]

MIAMI — Golf superstar Tiger Woods was expected to finally break his silence on Sunday more than two days after crashing his car into a fire hydrant and a tree near his home in Florida. [4]

Woods, the world’s top golfer and a major sports marketing star, hit a fire hydrant and tree early Friday as he pulled his Cadillac Escalade out of the driveway of his house in Windermere, Florida, near Orlando, the Florida Highway Patrol said. [5]

An Isleworth security guard stands watch outside Tiger Woods house, on the left, in Windermere on Friday, November 27, 2009. [6]

They were inflicted by his wife, Elin Nordegren — according to a conversation Woods had Friday after the accident. [7]

Woods, 33, was lying in the street, bleeding from his mouth and drifting in and out of consciousness when police arrived at his home after the 2:25 a.m. [1]

The 14-time major winner has twice delayed making a statement to police about the crash at 2:25 am on Friday, fueling rumors it may have been caused by a domestic spat with his Swedish ex-supermodel wife. [4]

- Golf star Tiger Woods accepted responsibility on Sunday for the car accident that took place outside his Florida home and again canceled an interview with authorities investigating the incident. [2]

The Florida Highway Patrol was told Woods and his wife were unavailable to investigators who hoped to grill the $100 million-a-year man about his smash-up with a fire hydrant and tree. [1]

The one-time Swedish model grabbed a golf club, smashed out a rear window in the SUV and helped Woods out of the wreck, said Windermere Police Chief Daniel Saylor. [3]

Investigators planned to question Woods, 33, who made a triumphant return to professional golf this year after missing much of last season following reconstructive knee surgery. [5]

By the time a Windermere police officer arrived about 2:25 a.m., Elin Nordegren Woods had dragged her husband out of his 2009 Cadillac Escalade. [6]

Following reports of a car accident involving Tiger Woods, the Windermere, FL police chief told the AP that Woods’ wife, Elin Nordegren Woods, smashed the SUV’s rear window to help her husband get out of the car. [8]

all the president s men

Monday, November 30th, 2009

With a heightened realist style that recreated the Washington Post newsroom down to its garbage, All the President’s Men became a popular and critical success, indicating that the public had not yet tired of the Watergate story — at least when it featured Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman. [1]

All the President’s Men is a 1976 film based on the 1974 non-fiction book of the same name by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, the two journalists investigating the Watergate scandal for the Washington Post. [2]

Impartiality aside, no film blends the elements of journalism and Washington intrigue more compellingly than “All the President’s Men,” the story of two Washington Post reporters who helped take down the No. 1 resident on Pennsylvania Avenue, transforming both politics and journalism. [3]

He would gain an Oscar twelve years later for his portrayal of Raymond Babbitt in “Rain Man,” his finest performance to date, but his role in “All the President’s Men” is of a different caliber. [4]

With ALL THE PRESIDENT’S MEN, director Alan Pakula adapts the best-selling book by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein. [5]

He is the author of Loyalties: A Son’s Memoir, and has coauthored His Holiness: John Paul II and the History of Our Time with Marco Politi, as well as All the President’s Men and The Final Days with Bob Woodward. [6]

Conspiracy film specialist Alan J. Pakula turned journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein’s best-selling account of their Watergate investigation into one of the hit films of Bicentennial year 1976. [1]

Beginning with the story of a simple burglary at Democratic headquarters and then continuing with headline after headline, Bernstein and Woodward kept the tale of conspiracy and the trail of dirty tricks coming ‘ delivering the stunning revelations and pieces in the Watergate puzzle that brought about Nixon’s scandalous downfall. [6]

Reporters Woodward and Bernstein uncover the details of the Watergate scandal that leads to President Nixon’s resignation. [4]

All the President’s Men is a 1974 non-fiction book by Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward, two of the journalists investigating the first Watergate break-in and ensuing scandal for The Washington Post. [7]

The pacing of the film is quick and exciting, drawing viewers into the action of one of the most intriguing mysteries in all of American political history. [5]

Twenty years after the break-in (here’s the original story), The Washington Post ran retrospectives about Watergate: a story about this movie, “”Journalism’s Finest 2 Hours and 16 Minutes, ” speculation on the probable identity of Deep Throat and editor Ben Bradlee’s reflections on those pivotal 26 months. [...] Not only did The Post win a Pulitzer for its Watergate coverage, but this film was also nominated for an Academy Award as Best Picture (it lost to “Rocky”). [3]

While researching a story about a botched 1972 burglary of Democratic Party headquarters at the Watergate apartment complex, green Washington Post reporters/rivals Woodward (Robert Redford, who also exec produced) and Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman) stumble on a possible connection between the burglars and a White House staffer. june 17 1972

Monday, November 30th, 2009

The three tell their story to Washington Post reporter Carl Bernstein in late September 1972, and Bernstein’s colleague Bob Woodward learns more from his FBI source, “Deep Throat,” days later (see October 7, 1972 and October 9, 1972). [1]

According to Watergate burglar Eugenio Martinez (see 2:30 a.m.June 17, 1972), White House aide E. Howard Hunt, whom he calls by his old CIA code name “Eduardo” (see September 9, 1971), is ratcheting up the activities of the White House “Plumbers” operation. [2]

The Watergate burglaries, which took place on May 28 and June 17, 1972, were the focus of the Watergate scandal that ultimately led to the resignation of United States President Richard Nixon. [...] Physical evidence that might or might not have corroborated the testimony was destroyed by a number of people involved in and peripheral to first burglary, including G. Gordon Liddy, Jeb Magruder, John Dean, and the acting head of the FBI at the time, L. Patrick Gray, who resigned after his admission of destruction of evidence that had been taken from the safe of E. Howard Hunt. [3]

White House Connections Confirmed - In mid-October 1972, the Washington Post will identify Dwight Chapin, President Nixon’s appointments secretary, as the person who hired Segretti and received reports of his campaign activities. [...] Segretti will later be identified as a CREEP official. [1]

It is from the Banco Internacional account that Watergate burglar Bernard Barker is paid $89,000 (see April-June 1972) and the “Dahlberg check” of $25,000 (see August 1-2, 1972). [...] McCord is introduced simply as “Jimmy,” an “old man from the CIA who used to do electronic jobs for the CIA and the FBI.” [...] While team leader and White House aide E. Howard Hunt hosts the banquet, Martinez and the other burglars will use the elevator to go to the DNC offices and “complete the mission.” [2]

FBI investigators will find that many of the acts of political espionage and sabotage conducted by Segretti and his colleagues are traced to this “offensive security” program, which was conceived and directed in the White House and by senior CREEP officials, and funded by the secret “slush fund” directed by CREEP finance manager Maurice Stans (see September 29, 1972). [...] In contrast, Iraq was a brittle, oppressive regime that might break easily. [...] Last Mission for Martinez - One of the burglars, Cuban emigre and CIA agent Eugenio Martinez, will recall the burglary. [1]

In a last campaign fundraising swing before April 7, when the new campaign finance laws go into effect, Maurice Stans, the financial chief for the Committee to Re-elect the President (CREEP), launches a final fundraising swing across the Southwest on behalf of Richard Nixon. [...] Hunt gives team member Bernard Barker $89,000 in checks from Mexican banks to cash for operational funds, and orders Barker to recruit new team members. [...] By this point, Martinez will later recall, G. Gordon Liddy, who had been involved in the burglary related to Pentagon Papers leaker Daniel Ellsberg, is involved. [2]
