myrna loy

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Myrna Loy (August 2, 1905 ‘ December 14, 1993) was an American actress. [1]

For more information on Myrna Loy, visit Britannica.com. [2]

With her almond-shaped eyes, tilted-up nose, and ladylike but wry and relaxed manner, Myrna Loy was one of Hollywood’s most popular actresses of the 1930s and maintained that stardom for decades. [3]

Myrna Williams, later to become Myrna Loy, was born on August 2, 1905 in Radersburg, Montana. [4]

In 1921, Loy posed for Harry Winebrenner’s statue titled “Spiritual,” which remained in front of Venice High School throughout the 20th century and can be seen in the opening scenes of the 1978 film Grease. [1]

She was one of the few stars that would start in the silent movies and make a successful transition into the sound era. [4]

She played bit parts in Hollywood movies before being cast as the exotic mistress in the 1925 production of Ben-Hur, which established her early film persona as a foreign vamp. [2]

She became very active in promoting liberal causes, was a thorn in Richard Nixon’s side for decades before it became popular, and was the first film star to work for the United Nations. [3]

In 1926, Myrna appeared in the Warner Brothers film called Satan in Sables which, at long last, landed her a contract. [4]

Originally typecast in exotic roles, often as a vamp or a woman of Asian descent, her career prospects improved following her portrayal of Nora Charles in The Thin Man (1934). [1]

She earned praise as the wittily sophisticated Nora Charles in The Thin Man (1934) and its sequels and in other movies such as The Best Years of Our Lives (1946), Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948), Cheaper by the Dozen (1950), and Lonelyhearts (1958). [2]

She is best remembered for her role of Nora Charles opposite William Powell in six “Thin Man” movies (The Thin Man (1934)). [5]

Stardom awaited her, and, in 1934, W.S. Van Dyke cast Loy opposite ideal co-star William Powell in the first of the hugely successful “Thin Man” comedy-mysteries, confirming her as a favorite with movie audiences around the country. [3]

One was in the The Prizefighter and the Lady and the other as Nora Charles in The Thin Man with William Powell. [4]

Loy was born Myrna Adele Williams to Adelle Mae (n?e Johnson) and rancher David Franklin Williams in Radersburg, Montana, a small town near Helena. [1]
