Sony has offered the Other OS feature on the original “fat” PS3 consoles since the units launched years ago. [3]

Since you’d have to partition the PS3’s hard drive to install any alternate operating system, it wouldn’t necessarily affect the way the PS3 functions as a game or media machine. [5]

That would be my guess as well - not that the Linux capability was the exploited part, apparently, from a few weeks back - but yes, such a crippling of what many argue to be a strong point must be related to an exploit. [6]

It seems like the sum total effect of this update is to remove ability to install another operating system on the PS3. [5]

As scheduled, today the PS3 Firmware 3.21 update is available for download and as Sony previously confirmed it disables the OtherOS functionality in an effort to make the PlayStation 3 entertainment system more secure. [7]

Luckily I took out a 3 year warranty when I purchased from game that still covers me and I hope to get a replacement and start playing again soon. [8]
