al jazeera

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Located in Qatar, and financed by the state of Qatar, Al Jazeera (which means “the peninsula”) has been broadcasting since 1996, and is uniquely positioned to broadcast the Arab world’s point of view to the Western public. [1]

Unfortunately due to circumstances beyond our control, Al Jazeera is no longer available via the broadband services Jalipo and VDC. [2]

Following the initial US$ 137 million grant from the Emir of Qatar, Al Jazeera had aimed to become self-sufficient through advertising by 2001, but when this failed to occur, the Emir agreed to several consecutive loans on a year-by-year basis (US$30 million in 2004, according to Arnaud de Borchgrave). [...] Initially launched as an Arabic news and current affairs satellite TV channel with the same name, Aljazeera has since expanded into a network with several outlets, including the Internet and specialty TV channels in multiple languages. [3]

Al Jazeera Satellite Channel is the Arab world’s only independent, professional news and information television channel. [1]

The original Aljazeera channel’s willingness to broadcast dissenting views, including on call-in shows, created controversies in the Arab states of the Persian Gulf. [...] Aljazeera is a television network headquartered in Doha, Qatar. [3]

As Colombians vote to replace Alvaro Uribe, jury is still out on the president’s tenure. [...] At least 15 people killed after troops storm convoy of ships trying to break Gaza siege. [4]

The editorial freedom exercised by its staff was unique in the Middle East, and its broadcasts were occasionally blocked by Arab states. [1]

The station gained worldwide attention following the September 11, 2001 attacks, when it was the only channel to cover the war in Afghanistan live from its office there. [3]

With its commanding viewer following, however, alJazeera has become a major media player in the Arab region. [...] The new channel started at 12h GMT on 15 November 2006 under the name Al Jazeera English and has broadcast centers in Doha (next to the original Al Jazeera headquarters and broadcast center), London, Kuala Lumpur and Washington D.C.. [1]

Al Jazeera’s availability (via satellite) throughout the Middle East changed the television landscape of the region. [3]

Uribe’s anointed successor wins first round of presidential polls but fails to avoid run-off. [4]

Memorial Day, which is observed on the last Monday of May, commemorates the men and women who died while in the military service. [2]

Many people observe this holiday by visiting cemeteries and memorials. [3]

Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. [1]

In observance of the holiday, many people visit cemeteries and memorials, and volunteers often place American flags on each grave site at national cemeteries. [2]

By honoring the nation’s war dead, we preserve their memory and thus their service and sacrifice. [4]

Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day because it was a time set aside to honor the nation’s Civil War dead by decorating their graves. [1]

This article is about the American holiday. [3]

All that the consecrated wealth and taste of the nation can add to their adornment and security is but a fitting tribute to the memory of her slain defenders. [...] It could be that Decoration Day and Memorial Day were celebrated concurrently in different parts of the North for many years until World War I. The South refused to acknowledge May 30th honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I. On June 19th, 1926 by joint resolution, U.S. Congress authorized and directed the Secratary of War to accept a tablet commemorating the designation of May 30th as Memorial Day. [...] It was called Decoration Day for the act of decorating the graves of dead soldiers with flowers. [5]

First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War (it is celebrated near the day of reunification after the Civil War), it was expanded after World War I. [3]

It’s a sacred day to all war veterans: None need to be reminded of the reason that Memorial Day must be commemorated. [4]

This 1868 celebration was inspired by local observances of the day in several towns throughout America that had taken place in the three years since the Civil War. [1]

As a ravishing Miss Hawaiian Tropic, sorority president, and calendar girl, Elle Woods (Witherspoon) is a big hit on the campus of her sun-drenched Los Angeles college. [4]

Starting in England, Annabelle “Annie” and Isabelle “Izzy” Woods are introduced as clever twin girls with a love for pink like their cousin Elle. [3]

In her senior year as a Southern California college student, girlish sorority president Elle Woods (Witherspoon) majors in fashion merchandising and is seriously in love with her boyfriend, Warner Huntington III (Davis), who will attend Harvard Law School next year. [6]

For a movie obsessed with image, Blonde is poorly lit and clumsily framed: Luketic’s deference to close-ups all but robs the film of Witherspoon’s talent for physical comedy, and an extemporaneous, mid-film musical number fails to register. [...] Legally Blonde has all the right elements for light entertainment: appropriately overzealous production design, an unflappable heroine played to giddy perfection, and a supporting cast that stays just south of over-the-top. [...] Reese Witherspoon adds yet another plucky striver character to her resume with this mostly successful attempt to merge the superlative teen film Clueless (1995) with the fish-out-of-water courtroom farce My Cousin Vinny (1992). [4]

Revealing mistakes: At the beginning of the movie, when the girls are still in England, it is raining, and they complain that the sun never shines there. [5]

I rarely go to actual movie theaters to see a film (I usually rent videos/DVDs), but I got an advance on this one, and I was kind of sad it had to be this film I was going to see, but I had been invited along with two other people to see it and I wasn’t going to say “no” for no reason. [...] One of the persons I went with just wanted to see Reese Witherspoon in a Playboy bunny costume, so I figured I was in for another average run-’o-the-mill sex comedy. [2]
