LOS ANGELES — The new CW makeover show “Plain Jane” promises more than it could possibly deliver: Before our very eyes, a socially inept and fashion-challenged young woman will be transformed into an intoxicating vision of loveliness with enough life-changing confidence to declare herself to her unsuspecting secret crush. [2]
I was all set to dismiss ‘Plain Jane’ (8 p.m., CW) when I found myself slightly amused and minimally charmed. [3]
So spare a thought for the girls on The CW’s new makeover show Plain Jane who go through their entire lives feeling that way. [4]
– CW goes old-school tonight with Plain Jane, a six-episode series about the most classic makeover subject out there: ourselves. [5]
The truth is a bit kinder: In return for confessing to a longtime crush that she’s had feelings for him, an ordinary looking woman - the “Plain Jane” - is treated to a makeover by British fashion journalist Louise Roe, whose bag of tricks doesn’t extend much past what you’d see on “What Not to Wear” or a host of other shows. [6]
But armed with a can-do attitude, a cat-walk gait and, in the first episode anyway, a Bloomingdale’s gift card, British stylist and fashion writer Louise Roe is convinced she can do it in a few days. [1]
“This show is about the insides, and how these girls gain confidence and understand themselves better,” Roe said during a recent conference call with reporters. [7]
In every episode, a nice, shy fashion disaster with self-esteem issues sends Roe an Internet video and begs to be saved from lonely Saturday nights. [3]
Step up fashion expert Louise Roe who helps transform them from Plain Janes to glamorous, confident women in her own unique way. [4]
Yes, the fashion expert spends the hour helping a woman who lacks poise, style and a decent hairdo prepare to tell the man of her dreams how she feels about him. [7]
Host Louise Roe — a leggy, brunette, self-proclaimed fashion expert with a fabulous British accent — is simply horrified by the spectacle. [5]
Every single episode there is at least one moment where sometimes even off camera I take them aside and say, ‘You have to do that’. [4]
‘Jane’ is based on the premise of any number of cookie-cutter chick flicks about dowdy damsels too shy and insecure to express their love to the guy they’ve had a crush on for eons. [...] Each ‘Jane’ episode sports the usual quotient of makeover moments and visits to fancy Hollywood boutiques, hair dressers and makeup salons that no mere mortal could possibly afford. [3]
