my morning jacket

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

The My Morning Jacket frontman sat in the prayer room of a church in a quiet neighborhood of his hometown last month, talking about old records, religion, philosophy and his perpetual yearning for understanding. [1]

My Morning Jacket formed at the tail-end of the 1990s, when Jim James’ group Month Of Sundays folded, and he began recording new songs with ex-members of local rockers Winter Death Club. [2]

My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James (center) says the band’s new album, Circuital, presented a special challenge: recording in his hometown of Louisville for the first time. [3]

My Morning Jacket’s new album, Circuital, comes out May 31. [5]

This week brings a new My Morning Jacket album, an Eddie Vedder ukulele outing, the umpteenth Dave Matthews Band live collection, and Ozzy’s past barks at the moon. [6]

My Morning Jacket recorded ‘Circuital’ in the city where they grew up, Louisville. [7]

The album also saw James stretch his song-writing chops beyond the familiar reference points of My Morning Jacket’s earlier work, an impulse he furthered with 2008’s Evil Urges, which scattered the group’s ragged rockers and tender, keening ballads with subtly sensual grooves and tracks that sounded like heavy metal laced with psychedelic soul and feral funk. [2]

These things color the Kentucky quintet’s much-anticipated new album, “Circuital,” and James says the record reflects a search he’s been on for some time. [1]

One of the few things that bound them was the heavy reliance on reverb, especially around Jim James ‘ voice, the better to make him seem omniscient. [7]

My Morning Jacket will be playing the Austin City Limits 10th Anniversary Music Festival on Saturday, September 17th, 2011. [8]

James decided he wanted to recreate the uncommon energy and communal spirit of that album and other lost gospel records, and rented the church (the band asked its name and exact location be withheld for privacy reasons). [1]

The band’s debut album, The Tennessee Fire, was released in May 1999. [4]

glaucoma

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

Glaucoma is an eye condition that develops when too much fluid pressure builds up inside of the eye. [1]

Acute angle closure glaucoma of the right eye. [2]

Glaucoma is a complicated disease in which damage to the optic nerve leads to progressive, irreversible vision loss. [3]

Finding out you have glaucoma can raise a lot of questions. [4]

Glaucoma refers to a group of eye conditions that lead to damage to the optic nerve, the nerve that carries visual information from the eye to the brain. [5]

Glaucoma is an eye disorder in which the optic nerve suffers damage, permanently damaging vision in the affected eye(s) and progressing to complete blindness if untreated. [2]

This information was developed by the National Eye Institute to help patients and their families search for general information about glaucoma. [6]

Glaucoma is not just one eye disease, but a group of eye conditions resulting in optic nerve damage, which causes loss of vision. [7]

Glaucoma is a group of diseases that can damage the eye’s optic nerve and result in vision loss and blindness. [6]

With untreated or uncontrolled glaucoma, you might eventually notice decreased ability to see at the edges of your vision (peripheral vision). [8]

There is no specific level of elevated eye pressure that definitely leads to glaucoma; conversely, there is no lower level of IOP that will absolutely eliminate a person’s risk of developing glaucoma. [3]

The increased pressure, called intraocular pressure, can damage the optic nerve, which transmits images to the brain. [1]

In many cases, damage to the optic nerve is due to increased pressure in the eye, also known as intraocular pressure (IOP). [5]

As the fluid builds up, the pressure inside the eye rises to a level that may damage the optic nerve. [6]

Sometimes called the silent thief of sight, glaucoma can damage your vision so gradually you may not notice any loss of vision until the disease is at an advanced stage. [7]

mantra

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

The most sacred Hindu mantra “Aum” (Om). [1]

A mantra is a sound, syllable, word, or group of words that is considered capable of “creating transformation” (cf. [2]

Doctors are not allowed to speak to the press directly: it’s the managers who hold the line, learn the key-words, repeat the magical mantra ‘No operations have been cancelled’ and spin the agenda-Daily Telegraph, 2007. [3]

Mantra is a characteristic element of the complex of Indian religions known today as Hinduism (Sanatana Dharma,) which uses Sanskrit as its holy language. [4]

A commonly repeated word or phrase: “Today’s edutainment software comes shrinkwrapped in the magic mantra: ‘makes learning fun.’” [5]

Here are some important ideas about mantra which will enable you to begin a practical understanding of what mantra is and what it can do. [6]

In Hinduism and Buddhism, a sacred utterance (syllable, word, or verse) believed to possess mystical or spiritual power. [3]

So that whereas Brahmins had been very strict on correct pronunciation, the Chinese, and indeed other Far-Eastern Buddhists were less concerned with this than correctly writing something down. [2]

Nevertheless, this is not to say that simply hearing the sound of the Thus-gone One’s awareness mantras through the power of the inconceivable emanations of the Buddha is completely pointless. [...] Buddhism as we know it emerged from the Indian context and mantra is a characteristic, even an essential, part of it, too. [4]

While Hindu tantra eventually came to see the letters as well as the sounds as representatives of the divine, the shift toward writing occurred when Buddhism traveled to China. [2]

Mantras have two components of primary importance - Meaning and Sound. [...] These Hindu texts describe speech itself as a goddess (known as “Vac”) and praise her power and potency. [1]

With the transition from ritualistic Vedic traditions to mystical and egalitarian Hindu schools of Yoga, Vedanta, Tantra and Bhakti, the orthodox attitude of the elite nature of mantra knowledge gave way to spiritual interpretations of mantras as a translation of the human will or desire into a form of action. [2]

The human consciousness is really a collection of states of consciousness which distributively exist throughout the physical and subtle bodies. [6]
