Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro (L) and Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez read a copy of the Cuban Communist Party (PCC) newspaper ”Granma” in Havana June 28, 2011, in this handout picture. [1]

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez typically gives hours of televised speeches a week but for two weeks he has disappeared from public view, undergoing an emergency operation in Cuba and prompting swirling speculation in the country’s political class about who might succeed him should he die. [2]

The images aired Tuesday night were the first to be released in 10 days and showed Chavez talking animatedly, both on his feet next to Castro and seated alongside one of his daughters. [3]

A thinner Hugo Chavez, right, was shown looking at Cuban newspaper Granma with Castro, the same paper that published the latest images of the leader on June 18. [4]

The newspaper also said the sources refused to comment on rumors in Venezuela that Chavez could be receiving treatment for prostate cancer. [5]

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez appeared in a video broadcast today on state television alongside Cuba’s Fidel Castro and spoke publicly for the first time since June 12, allaying rumors of his deteriorating health. [4]

The Venezuelan government has not addressed details of Chavez’s condition, and angry opposition lawmakers in Caracas say it is unconstitutional for the president to be governing from abroad. [5]

He won re-election as President in 2006 and then a 2009 plebiscite that lets him run as often as he wants. [6]

The cancellation was a big blow for supporters of the charismatic but authoritarian Venezuelan president, who had hoped return to host the July 5-6 meeting, which coincides with the South American nation’s 200th anniversary of independence. [1]

As a leftist Venezuelan paratrooper officer, he led a failed coup in 1992, but he was let out of prison just two years later and started campaigning for the presidency, which he won in 1998. [6]

Chavez has said the surgery removed a pelvic abscess, yet a lack of details about his condition has fed widespread speculation that the president might be very ill. [...] Venezuelan officials again said the 56-year-old Chavez is recuperating smoothly after pelvic surgery, but they gave no details about his condition or about when he might return home. [3]
