beauty and the beast

Saturday, July 30th, 2011

The film that officially signaled Disney’s animation renaissance (following The Little Mermaid) and the only animated feature to receive a Best Picture Oscar nomination, Beauty and the Beast remains the yardstick by which all other animated films should be measured. [1]

Beauty and the Beast is a 1991 American animated fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and released to theaters on November 22, 1991 by Walt Disney Pictures. [2]

Belle, whose father Maurice is imprisoned by the Beast (really an enchanted Prince), offers herself instead and finds the prince inside the Beast. [3]

Be our guest and join the beloved, independent Belle and the Beast with the soul of a prince as they cast an enchanting spell like never before. [4]

I feel in love with this movie the first time I saw it, and that love has only grown over the years. [1]

Beauty and the Beast (French: La Belle et la B?te) is a traditional fairy tale. [...] The best-known written version was an abridgement of her work published in 1756 by Jeanne-Marie Le Prince de Beaumont, in Magasin des enfants, ou dialogues entre une sage gouvernante et plusieurs de ses ?l?ves; an English translation appeared in 1757. [5]

The thirtieth film in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series, the film is based on the fairy tale La Belle et la B?te by Jeanne-Marie Le Prince de Beaumont and uses some ideas from the 1946 film of the same name. [2]

My opinions on Disney movies vary — some are good, some are almost unwatchable — but “Beauty and the Beast” is the best work the studio has ever done. [1]

It ended up winning two, for Best Original Score and Best Original Song for the song “Beauty and the Beast “. [2]

The merchant eventually loses all of his wealth in a tempest at sea, and he and his daughters must therefore live in a small farmhouse and work for their living. [5]

Beauty and the Beast was also nominated for several awards, and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, with two other awards for its music. [2]

The first published version of the fairy tale was a rendition by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve, published in La jeune am?ricaine, et les contes marins in 1740. [...] The Beast sends him on his way, with jewels and fine clothes for his daughters, and stresses that Belle must come to the castle of her own accord. [5]

So be our guest and join the beloved, independent Belle and the Beast with the soul of a prince as they cast an enchanting spell like never before. [4]

Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Jim Garrison tells the jury that Dr. James Humes destroyed the notes he took at the JFK autopsy. [1]

A technical triumph boasting Oscar-winning cinematography and editing, Stone’s film is guaranteed to grab the viewer’s attention with its daring take on the JFK controversy. [2]

Take AirTrain JFK free of charge to Federal Circle station for rental car offices and shuttle buses. [4]

While it is a dramatic picture and Stone most likely twisted a few things to make this a more relevant and better movie, it is still an undeniable powerhouse that has you go through a whole set of emotions, ranging from fear, anger, paranoia and sadness. [2]

In scene after scene, the impression conveyed by the movie is at odds with the historical record ‘ even at odds with what conspiracy buffs will admit is the record. [5]

Everybody done it ‘ everybody but Lee Harvey Oswald. [5]

Bravura filmmaking combined with controversial treatment of historical facts and audacious speculation, this breathtaking revision of history presents a mesmerizing parade of shady figures and conspiracy theories, unfolding like a classic mystery based on history’s greatest unsolved crime. [2]

dungeons and dragons

Saturday, July 30th, 2011

Dungeons & Dragons Fortune Cards, sold in booster packs of 8 cards, give players fun new ways to survive the challenges of the D&D Encounters in-store play program, as well as their home campaigns. [1]

Dungeons & Dragons (abbreviated as D&D or DnD) is a fantasy role-playing game (RPG) originally designed by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, and first published in 1974 by Tactical Studies Rules, Inc. (TSR). [2]

Dungeons & Dragons (D&D or DnD) is a role-playing game with a medieval theme featuring mythical creatures such as elves, dwarves, orcs, and dragons, but also semi-fictionalized demons. [...] For example, many of the more evil creatures in Dungeons and Dragons prey on each other as much as on good people (the iconic example being lawful evil devils and chaotic evil demons); some of the text in the game indicates that they should be left to do this, rather than someone trying to destroy one or the other and uniting them, however briefly, in a struggle against the interloper. [...] Players typically do not compete against one another; rather, the players cooperate to achieve goals and objectives while a referee, in this case called the dungeon master (DM) or game master (GM), interprets rules and adjudicates the success or failure of the players’ efforts. [3]

A suite of tools designed to make adventure building easy. [1]

The game has been published by Wizards of the Coast since 1997. [2]

Monster Vault: Threats to the Nentir Vale presents statistics, tactics, and lore for an array of new monsters that prowl the Nentir Vale, some of which trace their origins back to the earliest editions of the Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game. [4]

Players’ characters can gain more powers and abilities from earning experience points for completing various tasks (e.g. solving puzzles, killing enemies) during adventures. [3]

Although a small adventure entitled ‘Temple of the Frog ‘ was included in the Blackmoor rules supplement in 1975, the first stand-alone D&D module published by TSR was 1978’s Steading of the Hill Giant Chief, written by Gygax. [2]

Most of those rules and many of the subsequent rules were authored by Gary Gygax. [...] Players take the role of characters who solve a series of heroic adventures or quests. [3]

This book presents a complete heroic-tier campaign setting that plunges players into the politics, skullduggery, and peril of a city on the brink of destruction or greatness. [4]

The exploits of players can occur in any fantasy setting but at some point the adventure often occurs in a dungeon or subterranean locale not unlike Moria in Tolkien ’s The Lord of the Rings. [...] There are some who claim that Dave Arneson was the actual “inventor” of D&D, but this claim is disputed, not least by the fact that many references were authored by Gygax. [3]
