great white shark

Sunday, July 31st, 2011

Marine researchers in South Africa had a narrow escape after a three-metre-long great white shark breached the surface of the sea and leapt into their boat, becoming trapped on deck for more than an hour. [1]

A research boat off the coast of South Africa had an unwelcome visitor when a three-meter long great white shark leapt out of the water into their boat. [2]

A group of marine scientists were startled by an unexpected guest: a great white shark that lept into their boat. [3]

The great white shark, Carcharodon carcharias, also known as great white, white pointer, white shark, or white death, is a large lamniform shark found in coastal surface waters in all major oceans. [4]

A great white shark, similar to the one pictured here, had to be removed from a South African boat using a crane and ropes. [5]

The legendary great white shark is far more fearsome in our imaginations than in reality. [6]

Overview - As evidenced by the 1975 movie classic “Jaws,” the great white shark has both fascinated and frightened humans since its ominous presence first became known. [7]

Six members of Oceans Research organization were collecting data on sharks in Mossel Bay, 241 miles west of Cape Town, when the nine-foot, eight-inch long shark leaped out of the water and landed on the boat’s fuel and bait storage containers, the Cape Times reported. [3]

“Next thing I know I hear a splash, and see a white shark breach out of the water from [the] side of the boat hovering, literally, over the crew member who was chumming [throwing food bait] on the port side,” she said. [1]

They are streamlined, torpedo-shaped swimmers with powerful tails that can propel them through the water at speeds of up to 15 miles (24 kilometers) per hour. [6]

Marine scientists studying sharks in South Africa got closer to their subject than they expected — when a great white jumped out of the sea and into their boat, according to reports Tuesday. [3]

The seven-person crew aboard the Cheetah was using sardines as shark bait while they were attempting to conduct a population study for Ocean’s Research, a South African research institute. [2]

They have slate-gray upper bodies to blend in with the rocky coastal sea floor, but get their name from their universally white underbellies. [6]

big brother

Sunday, July 31st, 2011

What Wednesday’s Big Brother lacked in intensity, cat-fighting and drama, it made up for with the first real signs of complex, strategic battle this season. [1]

Sunday night’s Big Brother episode featured Rachel - shocker - bawling again after a perceived slight, as well as a shameless, ridiculous celebrity plug by the Hoff. [2]

The Big Brother house dissolves into a sea of angry words and flared tempers as the houseguests try to outmaneuver each other and despite his best efforts another houseguest is eliminated. [3]

In the “Big Brother 13″ house, it looked like the plan was for the Veterans to keep Dominic and get rid of Adam. [4]

At the Big Brother house, cameras are on all day, all night. [5]

The house guests begin to introduce other people at the Big Brother house. [...] Contestants must compete against each other for a chance to win $500,000 in a house wired with cameras and microphones, capturing their every move for a TV and Internet audience. [6]

Brendon is saying they don’t trust her anymore - she played too hard to try to get them to backdoor Jeff. [4]

Daniele’s finger-waving fight with Brendon and Rachel opens the episode, followed by an intense confrontation between Jeff and Dominic in the “purple room.” [5]

After Jeff and Jordan are picked for the Veto competition, Daniele makes what she may look back on as a grave error. [1]

Jeff’s “logic” is that Dominic leaves the house now because he knew about Daniele’s plan and didn’t rat her out to the other Veterans. [4]

There is no real reason Brendon and Rachel have to be in an alliance with Jordan and Jeff. [1]

But Jeff blames Dominic for the backdoor plan, so Dominic is getting blamed for Dani’s plan and he amazingly does not throw her under the bus to Jeff. [4]

Minus 5 for the snoring, though. [2]

Sunday, July 31st, 2011

Thanks to the generosity of Melaleuca’s Marketing Executives, customers, employees, and community, the Melaleuca Foundation has been ready to help in times of tragedy and disaster. [1]

Melaleuca trees, (Melaleuca quinquenervia), also known as punk trees or paperbark tea trees, are native to Australia. [2]

The plant is native to New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea and coastal Eastern Australia, from Botany Bay in New South Wales northwards, into Queensland and the Northern Territory. [3]

In Florida, however, melaleuca is a pest, especially in the Everglades and surrounding areas, where the trees grow into immense forests, virtually eliminating all other vegetation. [2]

It has become naturalised in the Everglades in Florida, where it is considered a serious weed by the USDA. [3]

The best-accepted common name for Melaleuca is simply melaleuca; however most of the larger species are also known as tea tree, and the smaller types as honey myrtles, while those species in which the bark is shed in flat, flexible sheets are referred to as paperbarks. [4]

Melaleuca quinquenervia, commonly known as Niaouli or Broad-leaved paperbark or the Paper Bark Tea Tree, is a small- to medium-sized tree of the allspice family, Myrtaceae. [3]

It is the most important species for commercial production of Tea tree oil (melaleuca oil), a topical antibacterial and antifungal agent used in a range of products including antiseptics, deodorants, shampoos and soaps. [5]

One well-known melaleuca, Melaleuca alternifolia, is notable for its essential oil which is both anti-fungal, and antibiotic, while safely usable for topical applications. [4]

[...] In the wild, Melaleuca plants are generally found in open forest, woodland or shrubland, particularly along watercourses and the edges of swamps. [4]

About 230 species are endemic to Australia, the few remaining species occur in Malaysia, Indonesia, New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and New Caledonia. [5]

) is a genus of plants in the myrtle family Myrtaceae known for its natural soothing and cleansing properties. [4]

The species grows in seasonally inundated plains and swampland in Australia, and can tolerate fires and seasonal waterlogging. [3]

kodak

Sunday, July 31st, 2011

Eastman Kodak Co., of Rochester, New York, is an American film maker and camera maker. [1]

The roll film used in the first model of the Kodak camera had a paper base but was soon superseded by a film with a cellulose base, a practical, transparent, flexible film. [2]

The first step towards that goal was the “Kojak” camera he introduced in 1888 which had a built-in 100-exposure paper roll film costing $25, a huge amount. [1]

Long known for its wide range of photographic film products, Kodak is re-focusing on two major markets: digital photography and digital printing. [2]

In 1883, a year after having solved troubles with bad quality gelatine that spoiled film plates, the company moved to a four-story building which later got the address 343 State Street, longtime headquarters address of the company. [1]

This new production from Cirque du Soleil is a lyrical, fanciful, kinetic foray into the seventh art. [5]

In 1879 George Eastman, amateur photographer and employee of a bank in Rochester, had invented an emulsion-coating machine for mass production of dry plates and got a patent on it in England. [1]

The company has 5,000 employees, including more than 1,200 artists from close to 50 different countries. [5]

For at least three quarters of the 20th century it played the dominant role in worldwide photography business. [...] After years of advertising the brand Kodak the company was renamed Eastman Kodak Co. In 1900 Eastman had reached his goal, offering the Brownie rollfilm camera which cost only $1 including a 6 exposure film. [1]

Bringing together dance, acrobatics, live video, filmed sequences and animation, the show takes spectators on a fantastic voyage through the history of cinema and its genres, taking them into the heart of the movie-making process. [5]

The license, which is royalty bearing to Kodak, enables CMEL to use Kodak technology (intellectual property, manufacturing know-how, and materials) for active matrix OLED modules in a variety of small to medium size display applications such as mobile phones, digital cameras and portable media players.
