George Clooney

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

George Clooney spent 10 years as an acting unknown until his role as Dr. Doug Ross in the hospital drama E.R. made him TV’s hottest heartthrob in 1994. [1]

George Clooney cast his hands and shoes in the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in 2007. [2]

He left the show in 1999 and moved on to an even more successful career in films, as an actor, producer and sometime director. [1]

George Timothy Clooney (born May 6, 1961) is an American actor, film director, producer, and screenwriter. [2]

Cousin is actor Miguel Ferrer, Rafael Ferrer and Debby Boone. [3]

Born in Lexington, Kentucky, as son of Nick Clooney, a TV newscaster of many years, who hosted a talk show at Cincinnati and often invited George into the studios already at the age of 5. [4]

His first movie, together with Charlie Sheen, stayed unreleased but got him the producers' attention for later contracts. [3]

Clooney’s feature directing debut was Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, the 2002 film based on the writings of game show impresario Chuck Barris. [...] It was around this time that Clooney, now an established actor equally as comfortable on the big screen as the small, began to branch out as the Executive Producer of such made-for-TV efforts as Killroy (1999) and Fail Safe (2000). [...] Though he would notoriously misstep in accepting the role of Bruce Wayne in the 1997 attempted Batman reboot Batman & Robin, Clooney’s honesty about the part being a bad fit was refreshing to audiences, and he took little flack for the movie, moving on to critically acclaimed movies like the action-laced crime comedy Out of Sight, and Terrence Malick ’s adaptation of The Thin Red Line. [1]

He won the 2006 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his work in the Middle East thriller Syriana (2005). [2]

Ninety percent of films are pretty mediocre, but they have a built-in audience and open on 3,000 screens. [3]

As the son of broadcast journalist Nick Clooney and the nephew of chanteuse Rosemary Clooney, George Clooney entered the world with show business coursing through his veins. [1]

We've been trying to push our involvement within the studio system, sort of push the things that we've learned from foreign and independent films through the '80s and push those things back into the studio system. [3]

His mother, Nina Bruce (n?e Warren, 1939-), is a former beauty pageant queen; his father, Nick Clooney, is a former anchorman, as well as a game show and American Movie Classics host. [2]

Venus Williams

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

Venus Williams dominated women’s tennis in 2000, winning singles titles at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and the Sydney Olympics, and winning doubles titles at Wimbledon and Sydney with her younger sister Serena. [1]

07.03.2011 LONDON– In somewhat of a mystery Venus Williams has lost to more or less an unknown player two years in a row by the same exact score after losing on the second Monday of Wimbledon to the 32nd seeded Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria 6-2, 6-3. [2]

During the next two years Venus was in the ascendancy, but in 2002 Serena bested her older sister three times to win the French and U.S. opens and Wimbledon. [1]

08.29.2011 NEW YORK– Venus Williams makes her 2011 US Open debut tonight in New York in the first round versus the 91st ranked Vesna Dolonts of Russia. [2]

She continued the success of her first Grand Slam by winning the U.S. Open in 2000. [1]

06.25.2011 LONDON– On Saturday, Wimbledon released the schedule of play for Monday. [2]

She then lost in the quarterfinals to World No. 8 Lindsay Davenport in a third set tiebreak. [...] She also holds the record for fastest serve in all four Grand Slam tournaments: 2003 Australian Open quarterfinal ‘ 125 mph (201 km/h), 2007 French Open second round, 2008 Wimbledon final, 2007 US Open first round ‘ 129 mph (208 km/h). [...] Her 21 Grand Slam titles ties her for twelfth on the all time list and is more than any other active female player except for her younger sister Serena Williams. [3]

Compton was infamous for its troubles with gang-related activity, and the girls practiced the game at a court in a park that gang members frequented. [1]

They have met in a total of eight Grand Slam finals, ahead of the number of finals played by Steffi Graf and Arantxa S?nchez Vicario and by Helen Wills Moody and Helen Jacobs but behind the record of fourteen finals set by Chris Evert and Martina Navr?tilov?. [3]

In 2001 she repeated as Wimbledon and U.S. Open champion (defeating Serena in the U.S. Open finals) and she won again at Wimbledon in 2005, 2007 and 2008. [1]

Her 35-match winning streak from the 2000 Wimbledon Championships to the 2000 Generali Ladies Linz tournament final is the longest winning streak since January 1, 2000. [3]

Venus’ sister Serena Williams plays her fourth round match as the first scheduled match on Court One, so there is a chance of both Williams sisters playing part of their matches at the exact same time just like old times! [2]

Obama jobs speech

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

In a fresh bid to kickstart economic recovery, President Obama reportedly plans to spell out new ideas to create jobs in a major address planned for early September. [1]

If spending three years delivering identical speeches created jobs, President Obama would be taking credit for 4% unemployment today. [...] But alas, every major Obama jobs speech promotes taking more money away from job-creators as the answer to job-creation. [2]

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama called for a major new burst of federal spending Tuesday, perhaps $150 billion or more, aiming to jolt the wobbly economy into a stronger recovery and reduce painfully persistent double-digit unemployment. [3]

WASHINGTON - Under fire in a nation desperate for jobs, President Barack Obama will soon announce a broad package of tax cuts, construction work and help for the millions of Americans who have been unemployed for months, a White House official said Wednesday. [4]

On a significant and related front, Obama will also present a specific plan to cut the suffocating long-term national debt and to pay for the cost of his new short-term economic ideas. [...] His debt proposal will be bigger than the $1.5 trillion package that a new “supercommittee” of Congress must come up with by late November. [5]

President Obama’s much anticipated speech outlining his jobs agenda for the 2012 election year will sound a lot like a tiny mouse trying to make a loud roar. [6]

Come September, Obama will try to reframe the jobs debate and press lawmakers to act on his ideas. [5]

We also hoped for a chance to get beyond some of the old political divides - between Democrats and Republicans, Red states and Blue states - that had prevented us from making progress. [...] At least President Bush came right out and said he had a tough time with tough critics Obama jus beat around the bush about it, personally if you ask me he’s afraid of loseing the majority so I hope that my fellow Clevelanders don’t fall for this crap again I didn’t buy it the first time and I don’t buy it now. [7]

Blame Congress: On his recent campaign (sorry, “official”) bus swing throughout the Midwest, the President has had a lot of blame to dish out. [...] His last major speech with new “proposals” was on April 13, 2011. [2]

Meanwhile, some of the very steps that were necessary to save the economy - like temporarily supporting the banks and the auto industry - fed the perception that Washington is still ignoring the middle class in favor of special interests. [7]

The final details of Obama’s new economic plan have not been decided, and it is expected to be broader than the proposals known so far. [4]

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

Now that they have dabbled in all handheld platforms, such as the PSP and Xperia Play, they are moving on and doing Sony Tablets: dubbed “S1″ and “S2.” [1]

The runaway success of the Apple iPad has now drawn the attention of other manufacturers to the potential of the computer tablet market. [2]

It’s the dawn of a new age, and Sony knows how to keep up with the trends - while making them better. [1]

Now, Sony wants to enter tablet market considering the gamers as top priority once again. [...] Sony is one of the most gamer-friendly electronics brands in the world and their latest XPeria Play already got lots of praises in gaming community. [3]

… given that Sony is going for the whole universal media experience with their expansion of the PlayStation Network to encompass a wider range of devices from laptops to calculator watches, it makes sense for them to create yet another access point to this portal of entertainment goodness. [4]

The Japanese electronics maker, Sony, has announced its first foray into the popular tablet PC market, unveiling two new devices. [5]

Unlike the S1, the S2 features two screens that are revealed only when the unit is folded out. [2]

The tablets, which carry the development names S1 and S2, will be launched worldwide from the fall onwards and were previewed on a Tokyo news conference in April. [5]

The screens are both 5.5 inches with 1024×480 pixels. [1]

The S2 is a folding device equipped with dual 5.5 inch screens and it’s small enough to fit in the inside pocket of a jacket. [5]

S1: The S1 features Honeycomb, the newest version of Android software, and may possibly upgrade to Android Ice Cream Sandwich later. [1]

As regards the design of the case of the S1, when placed on a flat surface the screen features a slight tilt towards the viewer. [2]

Best of all those tablets will run Android 3.0. [3]

It is a 9.4 inch media tablet with front and rear facing cameras, flat and touch screen with a wrap around design to resemble a folded magazine. [1]
