7 billionth baby

Monday, October 31st, 2011

Nutritious food is in short supply in many parts of the globe. [1]

“We have to raise productivity,” Robert Thompson, who serves on the International Food & Agricultural Trade Policy Council and is former director of rural development for the World Bank. [2]

To some demographers the milestone foreshadows turbulent times ahead: nations grappling with rapid urbanisation, environmental degradation and skyrocketing demand for healthcare, education, resources and jobs. [3]

Climate change could be the greatest impediment to meeting the food target as rising temperatures and droughts dry out farmlands which are then inundated by intense floods and storms. [...] Water usage is set to increase by 50 percent between 2007 and 2025 in developing nations and 18 percent in developed ones, with much of the increased use in the poorest countries as rising rural populations move to towns and cities. [1]

Many of these countries face challenges in terms of migration, poverty, food security, water management and climate change and we need to call attention to it.” [3]

To some demographers the milestone foreshadows turbulent times ahead: nations grappling with rapid urbanization, environmental degradation and skyrocketing demand for healthcare, education, resources and jobs. [...] The world’s 7 billionth person will be born into a population more aware than ever of the challenges of sustaining life on a crowded planet but no closer to a consensus about what to do about it. [4]

“There are parts of the world where the population is shrinking and in those parts of the world, they are worried about productivity, about being able to maintain a critical mass of people,” Babatunde Osotimehin, executive director of the U.N. Population Fund, told Reuters. [2]

The United Nations says the world’s seven billionth baby will be born on October 31. [1]

BAGHPAT, India, Oct 25 (Reuters) - The world’s 7 billionth person will be born into a population more aware than ever of the challenges of sustaining life on a crowded planet but no closer to a consensus about what to do about it. [3]

To others, a shrinking population, not overpopulation, could be the longer-term challenge as fertility rates drop and a shrinking workforce is pushed to support social safety for an aging populace. [5]

And while exact predictions vary, most suggest the global population will peak at around 9 billion around 2070 and then start to fall, perhaps very fast. [4]

The Cowboys and Eagles face off Sunday night in Philadelphia. [1]

PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Eagles jumped back into the NFC East race by jumping all over the Dallas Cowboys, rolling to a 34-7 victory on Sunday night at Lincoln Financial Field. [2]

The Eagles face a challenge in matching up with Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant (88) on Sunday. [3]

PHILADELPHIA — Given the career record of Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid in games immediately following bye weeks, you almost wonder why the Dallas Cowboys would bother to show up here tonight. [4]

The hatred of the Cowboys is more deeply rooted. [5]

Dating back to 2010, the Cowboys had dropped six games by 18 total points under Jason Garrett. [6]

Michael Vick threw two touchdown passes, McCoy had a career-best 185 yards rushing and two scores and the Philadelphia Eagles routed the Dallas Cowboys 34-7 Sunday night. [7]

This season, Eagles quarterback Michael Vick has been hit more than 30 times when he’s dropped back to pass. [1]

The second-year receiver has 19 catches for 339 yards in five games. [3]

It’s a New York vs. Philadelphia thing. [5]

Michael Vick picked apart the Cowboys’ secondary on throws inside the numbers Sunday, completing 18 of 20 passes for 258 of his 279 passing yards. [7]

They went 79 yards on eight plays for a touchdown on the first drive of the game and haven’t looked back, dominating Dallas on both sides of the ball in one of their most impressive efforts of the season. [4]

Nationally, it makes sense for the Eagles and the New York Giants to ban together in loathesome harmony. [5]

As I’ve said many times, the major difference in the Eagles’ run defense against Washington was better tackling. [3]

The Eagles got the ball back on their 10 and this drive was even more impressive than their first one - the Eagles moved 90 yards in seven plays and a 34-yard run by McCoy put the ball on the Dallas 2-yard line. [2]

As a rookie in 2005 prior to Turner’s arrival, Smith passed for just 875 yards, throwing only one touchdown pass and 11 interceptions. [2]

If other Chiefs opponents have had issues with their conditioning against Kansas City, then the Chargers might just be the next victim to follow suit. [...] Like many other NFL franchises, the San Diego Chargers have been organizing team workouts and practices. [...] As always, the San Diego Chargers remain a strong Super Bowl contender on paper, but outside of a single appearance in the AFC Championship game they have not proven worthy of the speculation. [6]

Turner also breathed life into the 49ers running game as second-year back Frank Gore had a breakout season in 2006. [...] He spent the 2001 season as the Bolts’ offensive coordinator under head coach Mike Riley and improved the Bolts offensive ranking from 28th to 11th. [2]

S Kendrick Lewis is the only member of the Kansas City Chiefs injury report and he’s listed as probable for Monday Night Football against the San Diego Chargers. [6]

Twice, Aikman and Irvin finished in the top three in the NFL in passing and receiving, respectively and tight end Jay Novacek led all NFL tight ends in receiving two years under Turner. [2]
