rose parade

Saturday, December 31st, 2011

The activists, part of a movement whose encampments across the country grabbed headlines for months, are trying to take their message into 2012 with a high-profile foray into the Rose Parade. [1]

Occupy protesters are busy finishing their float that will run at the end of the Rose Parade: a 70-by-40-foot octopus made of recycled plastic bags. [2]

In November, the Occupy group announced its plans to ‘occupy’ the parade, but the Pasadena Tournament of Roses provided a statement on Wednesday to CNSNews.com saying that protesters would ‘not be taking part in the Rose Parade’ because only official entries, approved by the tournament well in advance of the event, can take part in the event. [3]

– With the 123rd Rose Parade just days away, authorities are reminding prospective parade-goers that there are certain rules they must follow. [4]

The Rose Parade began at a Pasadena Valley Hunt Club meeting in 1890, when Professor Charles Holder suggested holding a festival to tell the world about California. [5]

- Although an Occupy Wall Street protest group in Pasadena, Calif., tried to get a slot to march in the Rose Parade on Jan. 2, officials with the parade said no. [3]

Accordingly, Honda will have the parade’s first float, entitled “Sweet Dreams” following the theme float in the 2012 parade. [6]

While volunteers at the Rose Palace were armed with scissors, thousands of gallons of glue and millions of flower petals, Occupy activists worked with plastic pipe and banners. [1]

Maneuvering the octopus “human float” took some practice in coordination. [1]
