The dismissal of that 13-year-old, Rachel Crow, represented everything that was wrong with the first season of “X Factor”: It was jumbled and confusing, with too much happening at once. [2]

Jackie Robinson

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

Jack Roosevelt “Jackie” Robinson (January 31, 1919 ‘ October 24, 1972) was the first African-American Major League Baseball (MLB) player of the modern times. [1]

Jackie Robinson was the first African-American to play in baseball’s major leagues in the modern era. [2]

Jackie Robinson became the first African-American to play major league baseball, becoming Rookie of the Year in 1947, National League MVP in 1949 and a World Series champ in 1955. [3]

But then again, there haven’t been many people like Jackie Robinson. [4]

Jackie Robinson’s high school teachers suggested a career in gardening. [5]

Only white players were accepted in the major leagues until 1947, when Robinson was called up to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers. [2]

Jackie Robinson led the way for generations of black athletes. [4]

To appreciate how far the nation has come, propelled by what began 60 years ago today, consider not the invectives that Robinson heard from opponents’ dugouts and fans but the way he had been praised. [5]

In 1997, on the 50th anniversary of Robinson’s first year with the Dodgers, Major League Baseball permanently retired Robinson’s uniform number, 42. [2]

Inducted into the Hall of Fame by BBWAA as Player in 1962 (124/160 ballots). [6]

Vitruvian Man

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

The Vitruvian Man is a world-renowned drawing created by Leonardo da Vinci circa 1487. [1]

An illustration of Vitruvian man by Cesariano in his Cosmo Vitruvius of 1521 reeks of failure. [2]

Having had access to Alberti’s and Vitruvius’ treatises, it is no surprise that Leonardo produced his own version of the Vitruvian man in his notebooks. [3]

In popular text on the golden ratio, one often finds the claim that the navel in the Vitruvian Man divides his hight in the golden ratio. [4]

Neither Leonardo nor Vitruvius make no mention of the Phallus as the center of the square, but it plays an important role in Leonardo’s success. [5]

The Notebooks of Leonardo DaVinci, Vol. 1 pp. 182-3. [6]

The drawing, which is in pen and ink on paper, depicts a male figure in two superimposed positions with his arms and legs apart and simultaneously inscribed in a circle and square. [1]

The pen and ink drawing by Leonardo da Vinci, depicting a man fitting his body to a circle and a square by adjusting the position of his arms and legs, is probably the most famous drawing in the world - judging by the fact that I see it in advertisements and worked into logos for holistic health centers and it is even the wallpaper design for my Windows main page. [2]

Encyclopaedia Britannica online states, “Leonardo envisaged the great picture chart of the human body he had produced through his anatomical drawings and Vitruvian Man as a cosmografia del minor mondo (cosmography of the microcosm). [1]

“We know very little about Leonardo’s apprenticeship in Verroccio’s workshop, but the short account provided by Vasari confirms that it included architectural and technological design, according to a concept that was being revived on the model of Vitruvius, as reproposed by Alberti” (Pedretti 14). Made at a time when public perception of computers’ abilities far exceeded their actual potential, WarGames benefited greatly from the mass confusion inherent in the onset of the home-computing movement. [2]

What we know, but Broderick doesn’t, is that the Pentagon, hoping to eliminate the chancy “human element” in the event of an actual war, has given its computer total, irreversable control over the launching of nuclear weaponry. [...] Computer-game aficionado Matthew Broderick inadverently taps into a hush-hush Pentagon computer, then proceeds to inaugurate his favorite game, “Global Thermonuclear War”. [2]

A young man finds a back door into a military central computer in which reality is confused with game-playing, possibly starting World War III. [5]

As much as the first factor dates it and the second factor may alienate viewers who came of age after the fall of the Iron Curtain, neither element prevents director John Badham ’s film from still playing like a skillfully put together thriller. [2]

The film follows David Lightman (Broderick), a young hacker who unwittingly accesses WOPR, a United States military supercomputer programmed to predict possible outcomes of nuclear war. [3]

Combining the addictive game play of tower defense with the explosiveness of war games - this is Warzone Tower Defense! [4]

The award winning team behind HBO’s fantastic political drama Recount are back with an adaptation of the best selling book “Game Change: Obama and the Clintons, McCain and Palin, and the Race of a Lifetime” by John Heilemann and Mark Halperin. [3]

Game Change is an upcoming Jay Roach film based on the book of the same name by journalists John Heilemann and Mark Halperin. [4]

Like I said, not a huge fan of the music, however, that’s a minor point to dwell on when there is so much to love - mostly the extended looks at the uncanny performances delivered by Ed Harris and, the incredible, Julianne Moore. [3]

The book also detailed an hour-long meeting between Hillary Rodham Clinton and pollster Mark Penn, during which Clinton accused Obama of “playing the race card ” and importing people into Iowa to improve his chances at the caucus. [5]

Check out this newly released trailer for Julianne Moore ’s upcoming film Game Change! [2]
